How to Curve Aluminum Extrusion?
There are several techniques for bending aluminum extrusions to create curved profiles:
Stretch Bending - The extrusion is clamped and bent around a large radius die using a machine that stretches the aluminum. Best for gentle curves.
Mandrel Bending - A thin-walled extrusion is wrapped around a tight radius mandrel for an accurate bend. Fast and consistent.
Roll Bending - An extrusion is progressively shaped through a series of bending rollers. A flexible and cost-effective approach.
Ram/push Bending - A semicircular ram forces the aluminum to conform over a form block.
Rotary Draw Bending – The extrusion is pulled through a round clamping die to induce tight radial bends.
- Three-roller bending
- Compression bending
- Stretch forming
The optimal technique depends on the required bend parameters, extrusion design, end-use application, and production volumes. Each exploits aluminum’s malleability to create permanent curved forms.
What Are Curved Aluminum Extrusions?
Curved aluminum extrusions are elongated aluminum profiles that have been bent into curved shapes during or after the extrusion process. They may contain:
- Gentle curves formed through stretch bending over large radius dies
- Tight bends made by wrapping around mandrels
- Multiple gradual bends from passing through many roller dies
- Tight radial curves induced by rotary draw bending
Unlike straight aluminum extrusions which maintain a constant cross-section, curved extrusions undergo controlled deformation forces that leave their cross-sectional profile intact while adding arcing shapes.
The combination of aluminum's malleability and the versatility of bending techniques allows the creation of extruded parts with both linear and curved sections. The curved aluminum offers functions not achievable using solely straight extruded profiles.
Why Use Curved Aluminum Extrusions?
Curved aluminum extrusions provide benefits beyond functionality by enabling more design options:
Structural Enhancement - Curves strengthen structures by dispersing stresses. Bends also allow larger span lengths.
Space Efficiency - Arcing profiles nest compactly and occupy less volume for transport or storage.
Aesthetic Variety - Curves introduce visually appealing shapes into products like furniture, architecture, exhibits, vehicles, and consumer goods.
Easier Joining - Bent sections interface cleanly with flat planes. This simplifies welding, mechanical fastening, or adhesive bonding to other components.
Light Weight - Aluminum's innate lightness allows larger or longer curving parts while minimizing product weight.
Durability - Aluminum naturally resists corrosion and requires little maintenance even when curved.
Customization - Extrusion bending provides extensive flexibility in part shapes. Almost any stable curve can be formed.
With advantages spanning engineering, manufacturing, visual appeal, and cost domains, curving aluminum extrusions solves problems straight extrusions cannot.
How Do Curved Aluminum Extrusions Work?
Curved aluminum extrusions function by undergoing controlled bending forces that transform straight extrusions into arched shapes:
1. extrusion is constrained by clamping dies and rigs. This allows strategic points along the length to be bent while keeping the overall part intact.
2. A combination of stresses is exerted, such as tensile stretching, compressed wrapping, drawing over mandrels, or rolling. These introduce plastic deformation into the aluminum profile.
3. The aluminum alloy elongates on the outer curve while compressing on the inside to create a permanent bend without cracking or collapsing the profile.
4. The deformation progresses until the component matches the die shape and desired curve measurements.
5. Removing the bending forces, the profile retains an arcing form with the same cross-section as the original straight extrusion.
Engineered bending parameters balance the malleability and strength of the aluminum with its minimum bending requirements to produce robust, curved extruded parts.
The curved sections then serve various mechanical, aesthetic, storage, or handling functions demanded by product designs.

Annealing or softening. Heating will be beneficial since it will anneal the material, which will make it softer and easier to bend. Additionally, it aids in reducing the cracking you are experiencing.
In contrast to other metals, which can become brittle at very low temperatures, aluminum and its alloys adapt well and grow even more resilient.
At all temperatures, aluminum fractures have a ductile tendency. When subjected to very low temperatures, many metals experience changes in their characteristics. Strength, hardness, brittleness, and durability all alter as a result.
When exposed to heat above 400 degrees Fahrenheit, aluminum is significantly more prone to distort and warp. Due to its great heat conductivity, aluminum may be more difficult to weld. Additionally, aluminum reacts with food ingredients, making it unsuitable for use in cooking appliances.

Without further tearing or breaking during the repair procedure, the item might be straightened or re-formed with the careful application of heat (400 0–500 0 F). The material will get softer at temperatures of 550 0 F and above.
The alloy offers a low strength at temperatures above 150 °C, with depreciation escalating over time. Over 200 °C, the weakening becomes significant and is accompanied by some ductility gain.

How to Choose The Right LED Profile for Your Project – YUZHI

These 20 x 40 mm rails are frequently found on CNC routers, diode laser engraver cutters, and 3D printers. These strike me as building blocks akin to the LAGOs of today and the Erector sets of a century ago. These extruded aluminum rails, however, are intended for makers, creators, and innovators in the field of digital manufacturing. Although the 200mm pieces are a bit too short for me to use on my current projects, it's still good to see the quality and almost flawless way in which their design goal has been executed. There are a ton of accessories that are difficult to interface control.
The length of each of the four sections of 2040 extrusion is the proper 200mm. neither flaws nor damage. 5 stars!
These are a wonderful pair if you need aluminum profiles. precise lengths and milled to specifications. It's not a major deal, but you must use metric bolts.
